Engine oil and oil filter

Check the engine oil level regularly. In addition, the oil must be changed and the filter replaced at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance chart.

  • Do not use oils with a diesel specification of “CD” or oils of a higher quality than specified. In addition, do not use oils labeled “ENERGY CONSERVING II” or higher.
  • Make sure that no foreign material enters the oil tank.
Recommended engine oil:
See page .
Oil quantity:
Oil change only:
3.65 L (3.86 US qt, 3.21 Imp.qt)
Oil change and filter replacement:
3.95 L (4.18 US qt, 3.48 Imp.qt)
To check the engine oil level
  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.

  2. Remove the rear cup holder panel by removing the quick fastener screws.

  3. Start the engine and warm it up to a normal operating temperature (the engine oil temperature should reach 60 °C [140 °F]), then let the engine idle for a minimum of 10 seconds before turning the engine off.

If the engine is cold, take the vehicle for a short drive or let it idle for approximately 10 minutes before checking the engine oil level.

  4. Remove the engine oil tank filler cap and wipe the dipstick with a clean rag.

  5. Insert the dipstick back into the oil tank (without screwing it in), and then remove it again to check the oil level.

The engine oil level should be between the tip of the dipstick and the maximum level mark.

  6. If the oil level is not between the tip of the dipstick and the maximum level mark, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level.

  7. Check the O-ring for damage, and replace it if necessary.

  8. Install the engine oil tank filler cap.

  9. Place the rear cup holder panel in the original position, and then install the quick fastener screws.

  11. Install the engine oil drain bolts, engine oil tank drain bolt, oil cooler drain bolts and their new gaskets, and then tighten the bolts to the specified torques.

    Tightening torques:
    Engine oil drain bolt:
    20 N·m (2.0 kgf·m, 15 lb·ft)
    Engine oil tank drain bolt:
    9 N·m (0.9 kgf·m, 6.6 lb·ft)
    Oil cooler drain bolt:
    10 N·m (1.0 kgf·m, 7.4 lb·ft)
  12. Add 1.50 L (1.59 US qt, 1.32 Imp.qt) of the recommended engine oil to the engine oil filler hole on the cylinder head.

  13. Add 2.05 L (2.17 US qt, 1.8 Imp.qt) of the recommended engine oil to the oil tank.

  14. Check the O-rings for damage, and replace them if necessary.

  15. Install and tighten the engine oil tank filler cap and the cylinder head cap.

  16. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes.

  17. Turn the engine off and wait for 10 minutes.

  18. Remove the engine oil tank filler cap, and then add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the maximum level mark on the dipstick.

Be sure to wipe off spilled oil on any parts after the engine and exhaust system have cooled down.

  19. Install and tighten the engine oil tank filler cap.

  20. Start the engine, and then let it idle for several minutes while checking it for oil leakage. If oil is leaking, immediately turn the engine off and check for the cause.

  21. Turn the engine off, and then check the oil level and correct it if necessary.

  22. Install the rear cup holder panel.

To change the engine oil and oil filter
  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.

  2. Remove the right rear panel by removing the bolts and quick fastener screw as shown.

  3. Drain the engine oil from the both the oil tank and the engine.

Refer to steps 2–10 of the “To change the engine oil” section for the oil draining procedure.

  4. Remove the oil filter cartridge with an oil filter wrench. Make sure that the O-ring is removed together with the oil filter cartridge. If the O-ring remains attached to the crankcase, oil leakage may occur.

An oil filter wrench is available from a Yamaha dealer.
